…where I will share with you this amazing journey of grandparenting.
This is a picture of my “Buba” (grandmother). Is this a great picture or what? It was probably taken in the early 1940’s
It’s Always An Adventure With Bubby. With WHAT? What is a Bubby! Bubby is the Jewish word for grandmother and when my daughter was pregnant with our first grandchild she asked me if I would be ok if her daughter called me “Bubby”. “NO!” I protested! That’s such an OLD sounding name. Ok, so I was in denial about being old enough to have a grandchild (I was 53 at the time). My protest landed on deaf ears and my daughter persuaded me to look at it as a cute and endearing name. Of course, when my first granddaughter spoke the word “Bubby” for the first time, well let’s just say she had me at “Bub”. When the subsequent grandchildren were born, that word Bubby became the most beautiful word in the world to me!
As a retired teacher I decided to substitute in the elementary school where my granddaughters attended. When our first granddaughter was in kindergarten, of course, she called me Bubby but in the classroom there was a sweet girl, named Hannah whose family was from the South where respect for adults was primary. Hannah overheard her call me Bubby then she started calling me Ms Bubby. Today, after 10 years of subbing, every kid the school now calls me Ms Bubby. I’m not even sure they know my real name but when I hear Mrs. Martinez, I know that child is new to the school. It always puts a smile on my face.
I have now decided to write about my experiences of being a grandparent and to share this amazing journey will all of you.
